Near New Chitose Airport: The Family-Friendly Spot That Has It All — Play, Food, Aquarium & Souvenirs

Just 15 minutes from the airport — and somehow still flying under the radar.

It has an aquarium, outdoor play equipment, seriously good food, and a full lineup of souvenirs you can only get here. If you’ve always thought of roadside stations as a quick pit stop, it’s time to think again.

My daughter spent a full two hours on the playground alone.

Indoor & Outdoor Play Areas That Kids Simply Won’t Leave

Inside the building, there’s a dedicated kids’ play area with wooden climbing structures, a slide, and soft foam toys — safe and fun even for toddlers.

Step outside and you’ll find a large multi-play structure that looks like a proper park. On a sunny day, kids can run around and burn off serious energy out here.

Just a 2-minute walk away is a “Traffic Park” — a replica road layout complete with crosswalks, perfect for kids learning to ride a bike. Bring a bicycle and let them practice!

The interior can get crowded on weekends, which makes stroller navigation a bit tricky. Try to go earlier in the morning, or bring a baby carrier as a backup.

The Hands-On Aquarium Next Door Is a Kids’ Dream

Right next to the roadside station is Sake no Furusato Chitose Aquarium.

This is no ordinary attraction — it’s one of Japan’s largest freshwater aquariums, and it shows.

The highlight is the Underwater Observation Zone, where you can look directly into the Chitose River through glass panels from the side — a first-of-its-kind facility in Japan. The water is so clear that some visitors mistake it for a regular tank. What you see changes with the seasons, so there’s always something new.

The Touch Zone is especially popular with kids: a touch pool with baby sturgeon and other fish, plus a doctor fish tank where tiny fish nibble away at the skin on your feet. It’s interactive in a way most aquariums aren’t.

“Watching” fish is one thing — being able to touch them takes the excitement to a completely different level.

[Mai’s Tip]
Same-day re-entry to the aquarium is allowed, so you can head back to the roadside station for lunch and return afterward. On busy days, it’s worth going to the aquarium first thing in the morning.

③ The Food Court Has Something for Everyone

There are several restaurants inside the roadside station:

  • TAMAGOYA — Oyakodon & Zangi: Fluffy, silky chicken-and-egg rice bowls paired with Hokkaido-style fried chicken. Kids love it.
  • Furusato Ramen Shokudo Chitosegawa: Ramen made with local seafood and vegetables.
  • Namara Umai Onigiri: A specialty rice ball shop using Hokkaido-grown ingredients. Great for takeout — grab a few and eat near the playground.
  • Salmon Bakery: Salmon-themed baked goods, including the famous “Big Shake Pan” — a massive salmon-shaped bread that’s literally bigger than a child’s face. Instant hit.

If you have two or three adults in the group, don’t miss the Sojo-don (Salmon Run Bowl).

It’s the signature dish at “Totomaru,” served not in a regular bowl but on a dramatic fish-shaped platter — and it’s brought to your table with staff banging a drum in a mini parade. There are two versions (male and female salmon), and the whole presentation gets the whole table excited, kids included. It tastes as good as it looks.

[Mai’s Tip]
Weekends fill up fast. Aim to arrive before 11am, or time your meal for after 1pm to avoid the peak rush.

Exclusive Souvenirs You Can Only Find Here

The gift shop carries a range of products you won’t find anywhere else in Hokkaido.

The standout is the Ikura Shoyu (salmon roe soy sauce) — a grand prize winner at the 2024 Condiment Championship. It has the rich, savory depth of salmon roe in a versatile sauce. And here’s the kicker: it’s not sold at New Chitose Airport. That’s the staff’s proudest selling point, announced over the in-store PA system with great enthusiasm.

Don’t be that person who thinks “I should have bought it there” while standing in the airport check-in line. Grab it here.

The Perfect Last Stop Before the Airport

Salmon Park Chitose is located just 15 minutes by car from New Chitose Airport — ideal for squeezing in one last outing when you’ve got time to spare before your flight.

The surrounding area also has family-friendly spots like Hana Road Eniwa (another roadside station with a play area) and Murakami Farm, where kids can try milking a cow. Combine a few spots and you’ve got a full day of very Hokkaido experiences.
